Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday in Nairobi, Kenya, said a new federal government must emerge in Nigeria on May 29, 2015 in accordance with the country’s constitution.

He stated this while answering questions from the BBC on Saturday’s postponement of the 2015 general elections.

The former president said the constitution clearly states out how a new government should emerge. “That is all I can go by. I cannot go by any situation or any other thing”, he said. Obasanjo also ruled out the possibility of an interim national government if by any means the presidential election fails to hold. He said, “I don’t know that because the constitution does not have provision for that.

There is no place in our constitution for an interim government. I will just have to wait and see”. “We will continue to have this type of uncertainty. We have had more than half a dozen of them in the past but we have survived them”, Obasanjo said when asked if he was concerned about Nigeria’s future if elections fail to hold.
